EU's new 2030 renewable energy targets passed-China General Machinery Industry Association
The European Parliament recently adopted a draft amendment to the Directive by a vote of 470 to 120. The amendment proposes to increase the share of renewable energy in energy consumption to 42.5 per cent by 2030. This is a significant increase from the current renewable energy directive of 32%, but lower than the previous target proposed by the European Commission. However, the draft amendment still uses renewable energy as a reference target of 45%. It is reported that the amendment requires the government to speed up the approval of renewable energy projects, and the promotion area will approve it within 12 months and other regions within 24 months. In addition, by promoting the use of biofuels and hydrogen in the transportation sector, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be reduced by 14.5 by 2030. The amendment will be published in the Official Journal and will enter into force upon formal approval by the Council of the European Union. In May 2022, as part of the "REPowerEU" plan, the European Commission proposed to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 45% by 2030 to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Although the European Parliament expressed support for this, the European Council requested that this target be maintained at 40%. After March this year, a preliminary compromise was reached, and the medium-term target was set at 42.5.
At this rate of decline, it will take 200 years for the global share of fossil energy to reach net zero.
